Life to Eagle Checklist.

Checklist for Life Scout to Prepare for Eagle rank.  Please follow this exactly!!


  1. Continue to work on BSA Eagle Scout requirements after achieving the rank of Life Scout.
  2. Select an Eagle Scout project. *** discuss the project with your troop leaders to see if it is a good and feasible project prior to starting any paperwork.***  If troop leadership thinks your idea is a good one for an eagle project, then proceed with the directions below.
    • Keep track of all man hours that you spend working on all aspects below.   Include all hours discussing the project with various people, filling out paperwork, etc...   If you have a discussion for an hour with someone.  That is 2 people x 1 hours, so 2 hours.   Keep track of all hours the entire time.  
    • download the Eagle Project Workbook to your computer. (Don't just open it and fill it out online, it needs to be downloaded to a local computer and opened with adobe reader.  Fill it out on the computer.  DO NOT FILL IT OUT BY HAND.)     
    • Review the Navigating the Eagle Scout Service Project document to help you understand the information they are looking for in your workbook.  
    • Complete the Eagle Scout Project Proposal portions of the workbook.  Complete portions of the workbook prior to the page for the approval signatures as well as the fundraising section if your are fundraising, please use the pdf fillable form on a computer,  email a pdf copy to the troop scoutmaster, committee chair, eagle mentor(project coach), and advancement chair to look over.   Revise workbook as needed based on feedback.  This may take a few rounds.
    • Ask the advancement chair or eagle mentor for the google document with all the needed addresses for unit leaders, etc...
    • Review the BSA Age Guidelines for Tool Use and Work at Elevations or Excavations if doing any construction or landscaping.
    • Once the revision process is complete, present workbook to Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Chair, and beneficiary for approval and signatures.
    • Complete the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project  Application Cover Sheet
    • Contact the District Advancement Committee for appointment to obtain district approval to start your project (Ask Trent Hancock who to contact). Take the cover sheet and signed workbook to the appointment. Make sure he signs it.
    • Once you have the required signatures, scan and email a copy of the workbook to the Troop 2000 Eagle Mentor.
    • YOU CANNOT START YOUR EAGLE PROJECT UNTIL ALL OF THE ABOVE IS DONE!!
    • Before you start your project, Complete the Eagle Scout Service Project Plan in the middle of the workbook which is designed to help you with the logistics of the project.
    • Recruit help:  If you do not recruit, you may have a poor turnout.  Talk to your friends, family, and scouts.   Personally ask them to help out.  Email the troop, friends, and family at least two weeks prior to your project so they can block off their schedule.  Make sure the project gets listed on the Troop Calendar.  Email everyone a few days prior to the project with complete details about the work to be done, what to bring, tools to bring,  safety equipment needs, etc....   Email the group the day before reminding them about the project again.  Post the project information on our Facebook Group like the emails.
    • Complete project, including tracking the work hours of all individuals (scouts, other youth, leaders, and other adults) throughout the project.
    • You can use this Project Sign In Sheet if you choose.
    • For each day worked on the project, immediately submit total hours worked to the Troop Advancement Chair or Eagle Mentor for each individual scout and leader for service project credit.  Please do this immediately after each work session
    • When the Eagle Project is complete, finish the Eagle Scout Service Project Report (post-project section) of the workbook including completion signatures at the back of the book.  Do not forget to do this part!!  Then scan and email the completed copy of the workbook to the Troop 2000 Eagle Mentor.  Your eagle project completion date is when the last signature has been obtained.
    • When the Eagle Project is completed and all paperwork signed, fill out the Troop 2000 Eagle Project Form Online at http://tinyurl.com/eagleprojectinfo

  3. While a Life Scout, submit a list of contacts for Eagle Scout Reference Letters to the Eagle Mentor at http://tinyurl.com/troop2000eaglereferences   References come from the following.
    1.)  Parents/Guardian
    2.)  Religious
    3.)  Educational
    4.)  Employer or other if never employed
    5.)  Other
    6.)  Other
    The last two references should not be close family, and preferably not someone in scouting. They can be another school, religious or job contact. They can be a neighbor across the street who has watched the candidate grow over the years and has had some contact with him.  Always verify with them that they are willing to do it before submitting your references!!
  4. Complete all of the Eagle Scout requirements and arrange for a Scoutmaster Conference
  5. Once everything above is completed, contact the Troop 2000 Advancement Chair and have them email you an Eagle Application from Scoutbooks.  This is a fillable PDF.  Please download it and  fill out the remaining items out on the computer.   Then print it, sign it and get the signatures of the Committee Chair and Scout Master.  Do not fill out anything below the unit committee chair signature section.   Then return the form to the Eagle Mentor who will send it to the scout office. You can scan it to pdf and email to the Eagle Mentor.  The Eagle Mentor will send it to Tammy at the scout office.     You may also need the Eagle Application Assistance report from Troop Master to help with some of the dates on the Eagle Application.   You can request that from the Eagle Mentor. 
  6. ALL OF THE ABOVE NEEDS TO BE DONE PRIOR TO YOUR 18TH BIRTHDAY!!
  7. A verified Eagle Application will be sent back to the Eagle Mentor  
  8. After receiving the Verified Eagle Application, discuss when you want to do your Board of Review and the Eagle Mentor  will contact the District Eagle Coordinator for a District Board of Review.   
  9. Prior to the Board of Review
    • Prepare a one-page summary of your Eagle Scout Project 
    • Prepare a one-page summary of your Life Goals and Ambitions/Leadership PositionsThis is a statement of your ambitions and life purpose and a listing of leadership positions outside of troop positions held in your religious institution, school, camp, community, or other organizations, during which you demonstrated leadership skills. Include honors and awards received during this service.  Click on the link above for more information.    
  10. Make sure you have the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan, and Outdoor Code memorized and that you understand the meaning of each section.  Brush up on the history of Scouts BSA. Brush up on your square, half-hitch, tautline hitch, and bowline knots. Know how to recognize them and what they are used for.
  11. Make sure you review your past leadership positions in the troop and how you helped in those positions. You will be asked.
  12. Go through a mock board of review with some one who has been involved in an Eagle Board of Review before. 
  13. The following paperwork needs to be taken to the District Board of Review
    • Verified Eagle Scout Application from Hawkeye Area Council, with required signatures- Troop will bring
    • Unopened envelopes containing the Eagle Reference letters received- Troop will bring
    • Eagle Scout Project Summary and Life Goal and Ambitions documents - Scout to bring.
    • The completed Eagle Scout Project Book including all signatures, including any supporting information - Scout to bring
    • Your BSA manual to obtain Board of Review signature.  (optional, not done in Troop 2000)
  14. After a successful Eagle Board of Review, the signed verified Eagle Scout application will be submitted to the council office for processing by the Troop Advancement Chair.
  15. The paperwork will be processed by the council office to the national office, and will notify the troop when the paperwork has been returned from the national office.  This will take about up to 6-8 weeks.
