Become a Leader

If you plan to join the troop as an uniformed leader there are two positions:

1.)  Assistant Scoutmaster:  This is for those who will be part of the program, assisting on campouts and other actiivities

2.)  Committee Member:  This is for those in the background who deal with the operations of the troop, finances, fundraising, etc... or for those that do not think they can complete the training requirements within the first year.

We expect all of those who join to complete the training for their position.

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Joining Requirements

1.)  Go to my.scouting.org.  Create an account if you don't already have one.  Take Youth Protection Training (about 20 minutes).  Print out your certificate and place it with your application.  This will need to be renewed every 2 years.

2.)  Fill out an adult application for the BSA.  Position code SA (Assistant Scoutmaster). When you click on the link and the application opens up.  Please then download it to your computer and open it up in adobe reader.  It will be a fillable application then. Give it along with your YPT certificate to Troop Leadership.   Please make sure you sign the section in regards to background checks.

3.)  Look over the Hawkeye Area Council Calendar and register to take Scoutmaster Specific Training Parts 1 and 2, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (weekend course).  These courses are usually offered twice a year.  If you spend the whole week out at scout camp, it is usually offered there as well.

4.)  Go to the scout shop and get yourself a uniform and assistant scoutmaster patch.

5.)  When you have completed your training, you will get a patch that says "Trained".

6.)  Once you have received your BSA ID number, please go to my.scouting.org and associate your BSA ID with your username.

7.)  Supplemental Training.  At your leasure, please login into my.scouting.org and take Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb On Safely, Trek Safely, and Weather Hazards.  These need to be renewed every 2 years.

8.)  Supplemental Training.  Having one person on overnight events that has First Aid and CPR training is required as well.  So if you have the opportunity to takes these courses, please do.

9.)  Anytime you complete any training, please make sure to let the Advancement Chair know so it can be recorded in Troopmaster.

Committee Member Joining Requirements

3.)  Fill out an adult application for the BSA.  Position code MC (Committee Member) and give it along with your YPT certificate to Troop Leadership.   Please make sure you sign the section in regards to background checks.  When you click on the link and the application opens up.  Please then download it to your computer and open it up in adobe reader.  It will be a fillable application then.

4.)  Go to the scout shop and get yourself a uniform and committee member patch.

5.)  Once you have received your BSA ID number, please go to my.scouting.org and associate your BSA ID with your username.

Space Camp
